The Santa Monica Landmarks Commission will consider a local landmark nomination submitted by the Santa Monica Conservancy and Los Angeles Conservancy to preserve the iconic Mel’s Drive-In at the end of Route 66.  A hearing date will be determined shortly.

The Googie-style building, originally known as The Penguin, is the only Armet & Davis-designed coffee shop in Santa Monica. It was meticulously restored in 2018.

The property was listed for sale in 2025, raising alarm bells for Modernist fans and preservationists. After our landmark application was deemed complete by the City, the owners filed an application to demolish Mel's and build an 8-story mixed-use building, making the Landmarks Commission hearing even more critical.
