In 2026 historic preservation groups are marking several important milestones, including the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, 60th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, and 50th anniversaries of the Historic Preservation Fund and Historic Tax Credit. At the same time historic preservation is facing unprecedented challenges to historic places, narratives, and policies. Whether celebrating or advocating, we’ll make the most of our efforts if we speak with a unified voice.

Over the past several months, Preservation Action has been working with a grassroots coalition of preservation partners, led by the National Preservation Partners Network to identify a simple message that can help the preservation field present a strong, clear message across our work. Thanks to you we received over 90 submissions and even more comments for preservation's next tagline. This Is Historic was chosen by a coalition of national preservation partners, and NOW is the time to start using it!

Join us by adding This Is Historic to your messaging throughout the year and beyond. It’s flexible enough to use however it works for you:

  • Celebrate historic places, people, events, in your community
  • Advocate for programs, places, policies, and narratives compromised by federal, state or local government actions
  • Mark this moment in our history

The point is to use it widely and consistently to build visibility over time.
