The Alliance was pleased to see that work has begun to raise the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square! In May, developer Related Beal began work to dismantle the Citgo sign and relocate it to a safe foundation atop the same building, ensuring the future of this Boston icon. The work is expected to take at least six months and is the result of a 2017 deal between Related Beal and Citgo Petroleum Corp. following the Alliance’s popular efforts to locally Landmark the sign.

For many Bostonians the Citgo sign has transcended its original intent as an advertisement and instead become a landmark and a symbol of the city. The Alliance has been engaged with efforts to protect the sign since 2016 and is thrilled that work to keep it visible is well underway.
