White House Ballroom Construction Halted
On Tuesday, March 31, Richard Leon, a senior judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, temporarily blocked any further construction of a $400 million ballroom until the Administration of President Trump complies with its own various regulations and guidelines, including authorization from Congress, to build a new structure on the grounds of the historic White House.
The order to halt construction will last for 14 days to allow the Trump Administration time to appeal the decision and also exempts ongoing necessary work for the safety of the White House.
Our organization is very pleased with this decision and commends our partners, the National Trust for Historic Preservation which filed the lawsuit on behalf of the American people and all historic preservation advocates who care about the distinctive historic and architectural aesthetic of the people’s house—the White House.
