Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer (Deputy SHPO)

The Office of Historic Preservation is seeking a Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer to support the administration and management of statewide historic preservation programs. Under the direction of the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO), the Deputy SHPO assists in implementing programs established under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the California Register of Historical Resources, and related state preservation laws.

This executive-level position oversees the operations of the Office of Historic Preservation, provides leadership and supervision for all office units, and represents the SHPO at local, state, and national forums. The Deputy SHPO also serves as a key advisor to the SHPO, exercises signature authority on legal documents as authorized, and develops administrative frameworks to ensure compliance with federal requirements under 36 Code of Federal Regulations Part 61.

A successful applicant will also meet the Professional Qualifications Standards outlined in the “Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation."
