Chiricahua National Monument Becomes Chiricahua National Park
Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona is now Chiricahua National Park, following the signing of the Chiricahua National Park Act into law. First protected as a national monument in 1924, the roughly 12,000-acre park near Willcox preserves towering rhyolite spires and balanced rocks formed by a volcanic eruption about 27 million years ago, in a “sky island” where desert, grassland and forest meet.
It also protects thousands of years of human history, including the homeland of the Chiricahua Apache and the legacy of early homesteading families at Faraway Ranch. The National Park Service says hiking, camping, scenic drives and other visitor opportunities continue as before.
