Detroit Honors Dr. Janese Chapman as the City’s Historic Preservation Ordinance Turns 50
Preservation Detroit pays tribute to Dr. Janese Chapman, who led the City of Detroit’s Historic Designation Advisory Board for decades and was one of the pillars of the city’s preservation community. The board invites the public to a celebration of her legacy and service during its meeting on Thursday, November 12, 2026, at 4 p.m. at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, or online.
The tribute comes in a milestone month: Detroit’s historic preservation ordinance, enacted on November 5, 1976, turned 50. It created the legal framework for local historic districts that still protects many of the city’s historic buildings from demolition.
