The National Center for Atmospheric Research’s Mesa Lab, one of I. M. Pei’s most important buildings and arguably the most architecturally significant building in Boulder, has been under threat since the National Science Foundation issued a letter earlier this year seeking to dismantle the center and possibly sell the facility. Lawsuits have been filed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and the Environmental Defense Fund, and elected officials and residents have written to the NSF in opposition.

Historic Boulder reports two steps toward recognition and protection. The Mesa Lab’s nomination to the National Register of Historic Places has received a Preliminary Finding of Eligibility from History Colorado and goes before the Colorado Historic Preservation Review Board on November 20, 2026. Historic Boulder has also nominated the building for the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2027 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, which will be announced in early 2027.
