The Santa Monica City Council will rehear the Santa Monica Conservancy’s landmark application for 1921 20th Street, the Unfried House, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. Built in 1913, the house is an intact Craftsman Airplane Bungalow and one of the pioneering buildings of the southeast Pico Neighborhood, then known as Fairview Heights. Simon and Anna Unfried later built Unfried Hall, the area’s first commercial building, with four shops and a banquet hall; it was forced to close after a racially motivated city ordinance barred dancing in most of the city, and was later demolished.

More than 130 people turned out when the application went before the Landmarks Commission. The Conservancy encourages supporters to testify in person or email letters to councilmtgitems@santamonica.gov by noon on October 27; a prewritten letter is available through the Conservancy.
