The Historic Districts Council has launched Preserving Affordability: Unlocking Historic Tax Credits for Housing, a multi-year research and planning initiative on how federal and New York State historic rehabilitation tax credits could help fund repairs to New York City’s aging affordable housing. Thousands of affordable apartments are in buildings 50 to 100 years old, many potentially eligible for the National Register. The credits have already helped finance NYCHA work such as the Williamsburg Houses, where $142 million in historic tax credits supported the renovation of more than 1,600 apartments.

HDC will start with publicly supported and nonprofit-owned housing, identify concentrations of older buildings that may qualify, and develop a model that can be used citywide. The initiative is supported by The New York Community Trust.
