NY Landmarks Conservancy: Landmark Regulations Are Not to Blame for The Plaza’s Four-Year Closure

After news that The Plaza Hotel will close in January for four years of exterior repairs, the New York Landmarks Conservancy is pushing back on suggestions that landmark regulations are to blame. The Landmarks Preservation Commission routinely approves restoration work on intricate historic facades, the Conservancy notes, and the review process does not explain a four-year timeline.

The Conservancy holds a preservation easement on The Plaza’s exterior and led the campaign that made its Grand Ballroom, Terrace Room, Palm Court and Fifth Avenue Lobby interior landmarks in 2005; a major renovation that followed took under three years. It says owner Katara Hospitality did not notify it of the planned exterior work, and it is asking why the project will take four years, why the interiors must close, and what work is planned on what schedule. It also voiced concern for the hotel’s staff and the events displaced by the closure.
