Speak Out to Help Protect the Eisenhower Executive Office Building
Members of the public have the opportunity to submit comments against a harmful proposal from the Trump Administration to paint the Eisenhower Executive Office Building bright white. Painting the historic granite facade would cause irreparable damage to this important structure. The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) is set to consider the proposal at their May 7th meeting.
The Eisenhower building was built in 1871 as the State, War, and Navy Building and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971. The building's granite walls are significant character defining features. Painting the building would undermine the historic appearance of the building and cause irreversible damage to the structure by trapping moisture within the historic masonry. Additionally, this project would create ongoing maintenance challenges for the Eisenhower building, requiring frequent and expensive cleaning and repainting, at the expense of taxpayers.
