Boston City Council Hearing Could Shift Community Preservation Act Funds Away from Historic Preservation
The Boston City Council’s Committee on Community Preservation Act will hold a hearing on Docket #1601 on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. in the Iannella Chamber at Boston City Hall, with virtual testimony available. The docket explores raising the share of CPA funds dedicated to affordable housing.
Boston’s CPA money comes from a 1 percent property tax surcharge plus a state match. Today 50 percent goes to affordable housing and 20 percent each to historic preservation and to open space and recreation. The Boston Preservation Alliance warns that changing the split without increasing the total would cut funding for preservation, open space, or both. CPA grants are the only direct public funding for brick-and-mortar preservation projects in the city and have helped places such as the Footlight Club in Jamaica Plain, Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury and the Chinatown Immigrant Heritage Center.
The Alliance is encouraging people to share CPA-funded preservation success stories with their Councilors and to testify. Written comments can be sent to ccc.cpa@boston.gov.
