Go back in time when the streets were made of brick, windows were open to catch the breezes, and the sounds of children playing nearby were heard in the afternoons. Houses were built to last, as this one has, for over 100 years.
The first owners, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Moran, and their 6 year old daughter Florence, called this home in 1910. Solidly built using balloon construction and off grade foundation, this lovely Queen Anne home was noted in the 1985 survey of homes when Historic Springfield because a national historic district. By 2001 this home, like many others, sat neglected and run down.
It was at that time that Historic Springfield had a burst of revitalization and this home was one of the ones selected by Operation New Hope for a full restoration. From the double pane energy efficient windows, and insulation in the walls, to the new hardwood floors, the restored fireplace with gas logs, new electrical and plumbing, to the new metal roof and modern kitchen and baths.
In early years the third floor was sometimes rented out but today serves as a music studio for the current owners who raised their family in this home. Over time they have replaced the AC and appliances and lovingly maintained the structure of the home.
The fully fenced corner lot offers parking on the side street and easy access to the alley. The lot is big enough to add a garage or put in a garden.
Located in the heart of Historic Springfield this home has hosted many neighborhood parties and events such as First Fridays and Jax Porchfest. The front porch with its custom handpainted “rug” is a great place to chat with neighbors walking their dogs or on the way to one of the neighborhood breweries or restaurants.
Springfield is still a neighborhood in which everyone knows everyone, much as it was 100 plus years ago. People sit on front porches, take walks along the tree lined streets on much used sidewalks, and linger to chat with their neighbors. The character of the homes and the neighborhood has been preserved and its easy to see why Jacksonville’s first “suburb” has come back strong and continuing to thrive.
